Are you friends with your partner?

Friendship is key to keeping your relationship strong

Pop culture pushes for the strongest part of relationship to be lust but if you want the relationship to last the most important part to focus on is the friendship between you and your partner. This is because friendship is a form of being intimate - it requires trust, openness, and non-judgmental thoughts. While lusting after your partner makes it clear you sexually desire them, being friends with and caring for your partner shows that your commitment to them goes much deeper than a physical relationship.

Friendship implies that you want the best for the other person and that you want to encourage them and support them through thick and thin. Being friends with your partner helps the two of you determine who among your other friends is really there to help your relationship and not just stand by and watch a problem arise and destroy you. Being friends means that you can communicate well about both good and bad matters, that you accept any flaws your partner may have, that you can be playful with each other, that you can trust each other with the deepest and most personal secrets, and that you are willing to both learn from and teach each other as well as learning together.

However, being too close to your partner could lead to trouble. Sometimes in best friendships words are exchanged in the heat of the moment that can lead to the end of the friendship. As a result of fights like this it is easy for friendships to fall apart because it is likely the two people do not live together and therefore can easily avoid seeing each other. In a relationship it is harder to do that since nearly half of unmarried couples are participating in cohabitation or spend multiple nights a week at the other's home.

As Dr. Paul Coleman, author of

The 30 Secrets of Happily Married Couples

says, "When passion has its ups and downs, friendship is the stabilizing force. It says 'I care...you are important to me.'"

Is your relationship bordering on abusive?

Is your relationship bordering on abusive?

Emotional abuse is often harder to see and accept than physical abuse. When someone hurts your feelings its easy to blame yourself and not the abuser by trying to figure out what you did wrong to deserve this treatment. There are many steps to figuring out if you are in an emotionally abusive relationship.

1) If you feel like you're being put in situations often with your partner that have you thinking "uh-oh" it is time to reevaluate the relationship.

2) If you overhear your partner telling your friends negative things about you, it is likely that they are showing some abusive behavior by using those words as a weapon to keep you in shape. Language is a very powerful tool because words cannot be taken back.

3) Watch how your partner treats their parents. This is an indication of the importance of a parent-child relationship to them. While your relationship is relatively young your partner is on their best behavior so you need to imagine how things will be when they don't feel they need to hold their tongue around you anymore.

4) Evaluate whether or not you feel like you're walking on eggshells around them to spare their feelings. If so, abuse is most likely being performed because they have conditioned you not to feel fully comfortable in the relationship.

There are many ways to figuring out the extensiveness of abuse in your relationship, these are just a few key ways. Your partner showing one or two of these once in a while doesn't indicate an emotionally abusive relationship but if combinations of these actions occur very often it might be time to leave the relationship in the past. Patterns of abusive behavior rarely disappear and more often than not they just grow and become worse. There is no reason for abuse in a relationship that is based on love and affection.
